Finding Winter Hygge in the Shower
It’s currently cold, rainy, and I’m officially on uni break here in Sydney. After reading Saranya’s beautiful piece on Hygge in the Petrichor edition of WweaV, I was incredibly inspired to bring that same toasty warmth indoors and curate my own sensory sanctuary.
While I absolutely love beauty, I am a huge advocate for ethical, conscious consumption. I lean heavily toward natural, organic ingredients and brands that genuinely put people and the planet first. With that in mind, I want to share my revamped, modern take on the traditional Ayurvedic Abhyanga (oil massage) routine.
The aesthetic? Ultimate coziness wrapped in a warm, spicy, vanilla-honey embrace. All the products I highlight are gender-neutral.
Step 1: Setting the Scent & The Massage
To set the mood, I lit vanilla incense paired with a dhoop cone of frankincense and myrrh. Myrrh is incredibly grounding, while frankincense is perfect for tuning into your intuition. Together, they blend delightfully with the vanilla. If you do not like incense, please feel free to use room sprays or candles.

Then, the Abhyanga begins:
- The Scalp: I warmed up some organic batana oil, adding a few drops of vanilla and frankincense essential oils, and massaged it thoroughly into my scalp. Batana oil is a nutrient-dense, plant-based oil extracted from the nuts of the American palm tree (Elaeis oleifera). Indigenous to Central and South America, it is particularly celebrated in Honduras, where it has been used for centuries by the Miskito people to nourish their hair and skin. It melts at body temperature into a rich, butter-like consistency, making it an excellent deep conditioner for dry, brittle, or chemically damaged hair.
- The Body: Opting for what I had on hand, I warmed up some coconut oil, infused it with the same essential oils, and worked it into my skin.
- The Technique: I highly recommend using a natural fiber or bamboo dry brush (Organic India has great options, including exfoliating gloves) to massage the oil in large circles. Tip: The texture can feel harsh at first, so always adjust the pressure and brush softness to your comfort level!
Step 2: The Absorbing
Once oiled up, I let my hair and skin soak for about 30 minutes to an hour. This is prime time to throw on an uplifting podcast or curate the perfect shower playlist to boost the mood.
Here is a sneak peek at today’s joyful shower soundtrack:
Step 3: The Wash & Minimalist Magic

The Shampoo: To effectively wash the oil from your hair, an Ayurvedic shampoo like Indhulekha is brilliant, as it’s formulated for exactly this purpose. If you don’t have one, just turn up the water temperature slightly (warm water naturally helps strip the oil).
The Conditioner: I am currently obsessed with the Anihana Mānuka Honey & Almond Conditioner Bar. It smells incredible, but more importantly, it aligns perfectly with sustainable consumption. One bar replaces up to three plastic bottles of liquid conditioner! As someone with long, thick hair, I am amazed at how long this bar has lasted.
To keep the zero-waste vibe going, I blended the Anihana bar with the very last drop of my old OGX Coconut Coffee conditioner. The coffee notes blended flawlessly with the Mānuka honey. (Note: If you are looking for an accessible middle-ground brand that isn’t fully organic but avoids sulfates and harmful chemicals, OGX is a fantastic, high-powered option).
Step 4: Nostalgia & The Post-Shower Glow
I like to let my conditioner sit while I finish the rest of my shower routine, and this is where Lush comes in. Lush is the epitome of ethical beauty. Their products are handmade, cruelty-free, natural, and vegetarian. They are radically transparent about their ingredients and the people who make them. In fact, on every Lush Product you buy, you can see a little sticker of the person who packaged the product and the day they packaged it. And you can return empty bottles to them for store credit!

Since it’s winter here in Australia, they just launched a Banoffee Pie range. This scent is incredibly close to my heart; it brings rushing back the sweetest childhood memories of eating Banoffee pie at Pizza Express with my family.
After stepping out of the shower, I skipped the standard body lotion and reached straight for Lush’s Turmeric Latte Massage Bar.
- It’s packed with Fair Trade organic cocoa and shea butters, meaning you get intense, long-lasting moisture.
- I topped it off with a dash of the Banoffee body spray. The spicy nuttiness of the tonka and benzoin perfectly cuts through the heady sweetness of the honey and vanilla, creating the ultimate toasty, dessert-like scent.
Beauty is Playful
My biggest message here is that beauty and self-care should be fun, playful, and creative. It doesn’t have to be a rigid prescription, nor does it require designer labels or fleeting trends to bring you joy.

Find your own seasonal scent, whatever that looks like for you. Sometimes my routine is as simple as Mysore sandal soap and a plain, unscented lotion mixed with my own essential oils. Play with scent combinations, lean into nostalgia, but also embrace ethical consumption and minimalism.
Investing in high-quality, sustainable products like solid conditioner bars or rich massage bars might seem like a shift, but their longevity means you get far more value for money. Find what works for you, reduce your waste, and have fun romanticizing the little things!
