Maritime History Meets Dance!

Ahoy, fitness lovers! If you have scrolled through TikTok or Instagram lately, you have probably noticed something unexpected. Heavy, rhythmic 19th-century sailor songs are taking over our feeds. From the viral #ShantyTok harmonies to the grueling Sea Shanty Plank Challenge, these old maritime tracks have officially jumped ship into the modern fitness world.

We couldn’t resist the hype. We just recorded three brand-new videos blending the driving rhythm of sea shanties with the high-energy cardio of Zumba.

Here is a look at the fascinating history behind the trend, the incredible community growing around it, and why this musical fusion actually makes for the perfect workout.

The Origins: Music Born Out of Hard Labour

To understand why sea shanties work so well in a fitness class, you have to look at their history. In the 18th and 19th centuries, merchant sailors faced brutal, exhausting physical labour. To survive the monotony and keep everyone safe, they used sea shanties.

These were not just casual campfire songs. They were highly functional work tools. A lead singer (the “shantyman”) would call out a line, and the rest of the crew would bellow back in response. This steady, predictable rhythm ensured that dozens of men pulled heavy ropes or pushed massive anchors at the exact same microsecond. It was the original high-intensity interval training (HIIT) playlist.

The Trend: From Sea to Social Media

Fast forward to modern times. The sea shanty made a massive comeback when Scottish musician Nathan Evans posted “The Wellerman” on TikTok. The internet did what it does best: users used the “duet” feature to layer rich harmonies, basslines, and instruments over each other, creating a massive digital choir.

Recently, that musical trend evolved into a fitness phenomenon. Fitness creators and acapella groups started using the booming beats for rhythmic endurance tests, like the viral plank dance. The internet fell in love with the contrast between the upbeat folk music and the pure physical effort required to keep up.

The Community: Finding Connection in the Rhythm

What makes the sea shanty trend so beautiful, and why it fits the lifestyle space so well, is the sense of community. Historically, shanties required a crew to work as one. On social media, they require creators to collaborate across borders.

In the fitness world, this translates to pure, unadulterated group joy. When you sweat to a sea shanty, you aren’t just working out alone in a zone; you feel part of a collective “crew.” It is democratic, loud, encouraging, and deeply human. Anyone can join in, find the beat, and feel the shared energy.

Why We Explored Zumba on a Sea Shanty.

So, why did we decide to bring Zumba into the mix for our three new videos?

  1. The Ultimate Metronome: Zumba relies entirely on letting the music move your body. The hard, stomping downbeats of a sea shanty give you a perfect, unchanging tempo to ground your footwork.
  2. Built-In Interval Training: Shanties naturally build up in energy. The verses allow you to catch your breath with controlled, rhythmic steps, while the explosive, booming choruses are perfect for unleashing high-energy Zumba combinations, squats, and jumps.
  3. Pure, Ironic Fun: Let’s be honest. Traditional fitness playlists can get repetitive. Swapping out standard club beats for a pirate-esque maritime anthem adds an element of playfulness and humor that makes a gruelling cardio session fly by.

Our three new videos capture this exact magic. We took the traditional call-and-response energy, layered it with Latin-inspired Zumba moves, and created a breezy, smiling harbour party you won’t want to miss. Come dance along!
